An excellent stylist, who also takes on soprano saxophone and clarinet, Slagle’s function shows his abiding curiosity within the transitional music that adopted hard bop into free of charge jazz, although he’s at his substantial greatest when he underpins these latter-day forms using the essence from the blues. His impressive specialized mastery of his musical instruments is always noticeable but it is certainly never useful for its sake. Although adept on all of the musical instruments in his arsenal, Slagle could very well be must interesting on alto, where his sinuous single lines develop a musical atmosphere that’s both challenging and powerful in its strength.
