Steve Reid


Drummer, bandleader, and composer Steve Reid was created on January 29, 1944 within the South Bronx in NY. He became thinking about the drums when he noticed Artwork Blakey playing a dance in his community. The very next day, Reid procured a couple of drums with a friend of his mother’s and started playing. At age 16, Reid had been playing drums inside your home band in the famous Apollo in Harlem, beneath the path of Quincy Jones. It offers gigs, recording classes, and prolonged engagements with Walter Davis, Jackie McLean, Freddie Hubbard, Excess fat Domino, Weston, Martha Raye (yes, the comedian), Peggy Lee, the Barnum & Bailey Circus, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Mal Waldron, David Murray, the Audio in Movement dance troupe, Henry Threadgill, Charles Tyler (with whom he documented and toured thoroughly), Horace Metallic, Frank Lowe, Sam Streams, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Main Bey, Lester Bowie, Arthur Blythe, Charles Macpherson, Gary Bartz, Dexter Gordon, Dionne Warwick, and Olatunji, merely to name several. Ever the impartial, in 1976 Reid created his personal label known as Mustevic. He documented several albums including Rhythmatism (1975), Natural (1975), Nova (1976), New Live Edition of the attention (1976), Odyssey from the Oblong Square (1977), and Seems Across America (1978). These recordings fetch good looking sums on the initial vinyl fabric. In 1983, Reid performed drums on Kilometers Davis’ final strike record, Tutu. Within the years 1993 and 1995 he was voted percussionist of the entire year by Jazziz publication. Reid relocated to Lugano, Switzerland, but journeyed between NY and European countries extensively. He started recording along with his personal band in European countries and issued many good albums, including Influx in 1993, Reside in European countries in 2001, and Drum Tale and Trio-Invitation in 2002. Spirit Jazz Records within the U.K. reissued Nova and Rhythmatism in 2003 and 2005, respectively. The imprint also released Soul Walk in 2005, a fresh recording from the Steve Reid Outfit with his Western european group offering pianist/keyboardist Boris Nevsvetaev and Four Tet’s Kieran Hebden. Reid documented three duet albums with Hebden aswell, The Exchange Program, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, that have been released in 2006, and Tongues, released in 2007. Reid, Hebden, and Nevsvetaev journeyed to Dakar in 2007 and documented with several music artists from Senegal for the record Daxaar, his to begin three projected produces for the Domino label. Reid could not live to find out that dream become a reality. He came back to reside in NY in 2008, and documented another duet record with Hebden entitled NYC that same season. In ’09 2009, Reid was identified as having lung tumor. He noticed a fantasy when Great Britain’s Spirit Jazz imprint certified and re-released his 1977 Mustevic record Odyssey from the Oblong Square recording this year 2010 to great crucial acclaim. It received airplay from Western, Japanese, and much more gradually minded American DJs. On Apr 13 of 2010, Reid succumbed to malignancy. In 2011, a past due concert day with Hebden and Mats Gustafsson was released as Live in the South Lender on Smalltown Superjazzz.
