A legend from the tenor saxophone, Stanley Turrentine was renowned for his distinctively thick, rippling tone, an earthy grounding within the blues, and his capability to work a groove with spirit and imagination. Turrentine documented in a multitude of configurations, but was best-known for his Blue Notice soul-jazz jams from the ’60s, and in addition underwent a favorite fusion makeover in the first ’70s. Created in Pittsburgh on Apr 5, 1934, Turrentine started his career using numerous blues and R&B rings, with a solid impact from Illinois Jacquet. He performed in Lowell Fulson’s music group with Ray Charles from 1950-1951, and in 1953, he changed John Coltrane in Earl Bostic’s early R&B/jazz music group. After a middle-’50s stint within the armed service, Turrentine joined Maximum Roach’s music group and subsequently fulfilled organist Shirley Scott, whom he wedded in 1960 and would record with regularly. Upon shifting to Philadelphia, Turrentine struck up a chemistry with another organist, Jimmy Smith, showing up on Smith’s 1960 classics Back again at the Poultry Shack and Midnight Unique, amongst others. Also in 1960, Turrentine started recording like a innovator for Blue Notice, focusing chiefly on small-group soul-jazz on classics like THAT IS WHERE It’s At, but additionally dealing with the Three Seems (on 1961’s Blue Hour) and tinkering with bigger ensemble configurations within the middle-’60s. Because the ’70s dawned, Turrentine and Scott divorced and Turrentine became a favorite linchpin of Creed Taylor’s fresh, fusion-oriented CTI label; he documented five albums, highlighted by Sugars, Salt Song, and do not WRECK HAVOC ON Mister T.
