Biography
b. 13 Apr 1924, Columbia, SC, USA. The movie director and choreographer to get a string of traditional MGM musicals from the 50s, Donen was fascinated with film and theatre from an early on age group. After graduating from senior high school he done Broadway within the chorus from the Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart musical Pal Joey (1940), which starred Gene Kelly, and he aided Kelly within the choreography for Greatest Foot Forwards (1941) and in addition appeared within the chorus. Authorized to MGM, through the 40s he worked well as choreographer, co-choreographer and/or co-director of periodic sequences (frequently uncredited) on musicals such as for example Cover Woman, Hey First year, Jam Program, Kansas Town Kitty, Anchors Aweigh, VISIT TO Mexico, No Keep, No Love, SURVIVING IN A LARGE Way, THIS TIME AROUND For Helps to keep, A Day With Judy, The Kissing Bandit and Consider Me Out To The PASTIME. In 1949 Donen produced his formal directorial debut as Gene Kelly’s co-director within the acclaimed, groundbreaking musical OUT, and they worked well together on many more memorable movies, including Singin’ IN THE TORRENTIAL RAIN, It’s Always Good Weather as well as the Pajama Video game. Donen also brought his skill like a movie director of breathtakingly refreshing and exuberant sequences to photos such as Wedding ceremony Bells, PROVIDE A Girl A REST (also choreographed with Gower Champ), Deep IN MY OWN Heart, Seven Wedding brides For Seven Brothers, Crazy Encounter and Damn Yankees (1958). By that point the golden age group of film musicals was over, and, apart from THE TINY Prince (1974), Donen focused on directing (and creating) dramatic and light-comedy movies such as for example Indiscreet, The Lawn Is definitely Greener, Arabesque, Two For THE STREET, Bedazzled, Staircase, Lucky Woman, Movie, Film, Saturn 3, and Blame It On Rio (1984). Since that time, Donen continues to be rumoured to become trying to provide biographies of Judy Garland and Marlene Dietrich towards the display, but up to now nothing offers materialized. In 1988 he created the Academy Honours display, and five years later on produced his directorial debut on Broadway within the Jule Styne musical The Crimson Shoes. Following the primary movie director, Susan Schulman, bowed out in the first stages of creation, Donen had taken over. However, unlike those previously MGM musicals, there is no happy finishing and the present shut after three times. Nevertheless, in 1998 Donen received an Honorary Academy Prize ‘in appreciation of the body of function marked by sophistication, style, wit and visible innovation’.

For me directing is like having sex: when it's good, it's very good; but when it's bad, it's still good. |

If we remade Singin' in the Rain (1952) today, when Gene Kelly sings in the rain, I think he'd be looking around to make sure he wasn't going to get mugged. |
