Biography
Stanley Dark was perhaps one of the most prolific and eclectic Uk bandleaders from the postwar period, appearing daily on BBC radio and saving a large number of LPs and film ratings in a massive array of designs. Delivered in London on June 14, 1913, Dark began monitoring piano at age seven beneath the tutelage of Rae Robinson; he continued to wait the Mathay College of Music, and was simply 12 once the BBC Symphony Orchestra performed one of is own unique compositions (a variation he gained by earning a competition in Melody Maker). By age group 18, Dark was touring with bandleader Maurice Burman, within the years to check out working with English jazz luminaries including Howard Jacobs, Joe Orlando, Lew Rock, and Teddy Joyce. He also performed alongside going to American greats like Benny Carter, and also recorded a edition of “Honeysuckle Rose” using the famous Coleman Hawkins. In 1936 Dark authorized on with bandleader Harry Roy, staying along with his group for four years, including a 1937 South American tour that launched him to Latin American music, a custom his work frequently celebrated within the years to check out. During this time period, he also required his 1st stab at composing for cinema, adding to the rating from the film Tempo Racketeers. After providing in World Battle II, Black came back to London in 1944 and was appointed conductor from the BBC Dance Orchestra, broadcasting as much as six performances weekly for nine years and frequently topping Melody Maker’s lists of radio’s most-heard music artists. Using the dawn of long-playing information, he also started documenting for Decca, liberating as much as four albums each year like a headliner (many of which are very much valued by today’s connoisseurs of space age group pop, specifically the Exotic Percussion recording), furthermore to playing countless additional backing sessions. Together with all of this he also obtained movies — some 200 total during the period of his profession — including 1948’s It Constantly Rains on Weekend, 1951’s Laughter in Heaven, and 1957’s The Nude Truth. In 1952, Dark remaining the BBC to become listed on Decca like a full-time personnel conductor and arranger, and in 1958 he was appointed music movie director at Elstree Studios, where he obtained the Cliff Richard musicals The CHILDREN and Summer Vacation. Black received a Gramophone Honor in 1965 for his edition of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol, and continued to conduct the majority of Britain’s main orchestras. Regardless of the gradual lack of his hearing, he continuing directing broadcasts on the BBCs Maida Vale studios in to the 1990s. He passed away in London on November 27, 2002.
