Formed in the ashes from the trance-rockers Spacemen 3, singer/guitarist Jason Pierce’s group Spiritualized didn’t break from his prior band’s brand hypnotic minimalism; rather, they perfected it. Sketching on the continuing influence from the Velvet Underground, La Monte Youthful, and Steve Reich, Spiritualized staked out a typical surface between minimalism and lush symphonics — while driven by basic, repetitious motifs, their music concurrently blossomed into wealthy, shimmering sonic panoramas motivated with the majestic studio room wizardry of Phil Spector and Brian Wilson.
