Jochem Paap, aka Speedy J, is really a Rotterdam-based techno musician whose polished mixture of melodious electro-pop having a harder, more Detroit-fueled advantage has been being among the most highly-praised of post-rave Western techno. The Dutch rep in Richie “Plastikman” Hawtin’s In addition 8 label, Paap was similarly well-known like a golf club DJ (his nom de record is within mention of his prowess around the cut) before making a decision in 1997 to curtail his DJ engagements and concentrate on his music. His 1993 debut LP, Ginger, was an interesting mixture of ambient textures and hard, sharp beats, and was instantly smacked using the “smart dance music” label, along with the addition of a set of tracks around the first level of Warp’s important (Artificial Cleverness) series. Paap offers since released many follow-ups beneath the Speedy J moniker (G-Spot, General public Energy No. 1, A Surprising Hobby) and two single albums within an ambient series for Fax entitled Vrs-Mbnt-Pcs 9598 (simply re-insert the lacking vowels for an instant translation). He’s also documented a scattering of materials as General public Energy for Plus 8, in addition to for his personal Beam Me Up! label before discontinuing the second option in 1996. He’s cofounder of the Dutch remix network, focused on bringing Dutch digital musicians in touch with each other and fostering collaborative tasks, and before his moratorium around the DJ circuit was known for his dedication to getting dance-based experimental digital music to some wider target audience, playing out frequently in unlikely mixtures with organizations like Cypress Hill and Henry Rollins.
