Sophie Hutchings

Australian pianist/composer Sophie Hutchings match the post-classical genre. Flitting from your calming, idyllic, and melancholy to immediate and tempestuous, her music sat easily alongside that of Rachel’s, Maximum Richter, Peter Broderick, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Dustin O’Halloran, and Nils Frahm. Having a gregarious, outgoing character belied by her music’s wistful introspection, Hutchings was created right into a musical family members. Her dad was a jazz musician who experienced toured the U.S. and used Frank Sinatra, and her sibling Jamie fronted the choice rock-band Bluebottle Kiss. She started producing music as a kid on the family members piano. In old age she was affected by shoegaze and ambient, and by post-classical pioneer Jóhannsson, whom she once called her preferred composer. Initially incredibly shy about carrying out, she didn’t make her documenting debut until age group 32, when, this year 2010, Sydney experimental label Preservation released her 1st recording, Becalmed. Documented by Tim Whitten, longterm engineer for avant-garde trio the Necks, the recording was largely single piano, with the casual interjection of pedal metal, strings, and drum package. The affects of ambient, jazz, and indie rock and roll had been noticeable, but even more subliminal than overt, transmuted in some sort of musical alchemy. Possibly the most obvious affects on the recording had been seminal post-classical group Rachel’s and Michael Nyman’s traditional rating for The Piano. The recording was perfectly received, and Hutchings released a follow-up, Night time Sky, in 2012, which noticed her broaden her palette, including even more plans for strings and woodwind which offered the record even more of a chamber experience. A lot of her family, including her dad, played in the record. A totally single mini-album, White Light, made an appearance in 2014, before her third full-length, Wide Asleep, slipped in 2016.
