Biography

Art college students Marc Almond and Dave Ball shaped Soft Cell, a synth pop duo famed because of its uniquely sleazy digital audio, in Leeds, Britain in 1980. Originally, vocalist Almond and synth participant Ball teamed to compose music for theatrical productions, so when Soft Cell, their live shows continued to attract heavily around the pair’s history in drama as well as the visible arts. A self-financed EP entitled Mutant Occasions brought the duo to the eye of Some Bizzare label mind Stevo, who enlisted Daniel Miller to create their underground strike single “Memorabilia” the next year. It had been another Soft Cell work, 1981’s “Tainted Like,” that brought the duo to worldwide prominence; compiled by the Four Preps’ Ed Cobb and currently a cult preferred because of Gloria Jones’ soulful reading, the track was reinvented like a hypnotic digital dirge and became the year’s best-selling English single, and a main hit overseas. The group’s debut LP, nonstop Erotic Cabaret, was also enormously effective, and was accompanied by the 1982 remix collection nonstop Ecstatic Dance. While 1983’s The Artwork of Falling Aside proved as well-known mainly because its predecessors, the LP’s name broadly hinted at the inner complications plaguing the duo; before the launch of 1984’s This YESTERDAY EVENING in Sodom, Soft Cell experienced currently split up. Almond instantly created the electro-soul device Marc & the Mambas; another group, Marc Almond & the Prepared Sinners, followed prior to the vocalist finally embarked on a single profession in the past due ’80s that continuing well in to the 21st hundred years. Ball caused Psychic TV, Jack port the Tab, along with other organizations before developing the digital clothing the Grid within the ’90s and Nitewreckage in 2011. Soft Cell briefly reunited in 2001.
