SOAK

Irish singer/songwriter SOAK says her stage name originated from combining “soul” and “folk,” even though she doesn’t believe either word accurately describes her music, her breathy, emotionally revealing tracks and extra, powerfully evocative performing design are certainly soulful and folk-influenced, though there’s as much indie rock in her musical formula. SOAK was created Bridie Monds-Watson in Derry, Ireland in 1997. Monds-Watson was constantly a tomboy with a dynamic imagination, so that as a young child she took motivation from her parents’ Joni Mitchell, ABBA, and Green Floyd albums. When she was 13, Monds-Watson started playing your guitar, and a calendar year later she’d produced what she referred to as a “shitty music group” with some close friends. (That same calendar year, Monds-Watson arrived to her parents being a lesbian, though she insists her sexuality is normally rarely a significant element in her music, despite the interest they have received in the press.) Monds-Watson shortly followed the alias SOAK (which she records spells “kaos” backwards) and began playing solo displays, having adopted a fresh sound attracted from her fondness for the 1975 and Foals. Using the support of her mom (who drove her to her gigs, since she was as well young to operate a vehicle herself), SOAK started developing a pursuing on the energetic Derry music picture. In 2012, SOAK released her debut EP, Trains, another release, Sea Animals, soon adopted. Chvrches asked SOAK to record an EP for his or her Goodbye Information label, plus they released Blud in 2014. By that year’s end, SOAK got signed a cope with Tough Trade Records, as well as the BBC got put her on the Seems of 2015 longlist, an annual year-end tally offering 15 artists likely to break through in the entire year to arrive.
