Snuffy Jenkins

Biography

Bluegrass banjo pioneer DeWitt “Snuffy” Jenkins was created in Harris, NC, on Oct 27, 1908; the youngest of ten kids, most of whom excelled in music, he started playing the fiddle as a kid but was as well small to utilize the bow and for that reason picked the device such as a mandolin. He afterwards turned to electric guitar and by 1927 was playing within a trio with banjo players Smith Hammett and Rex Brooks; Jenkins copied their three-finger design, and in the years to check out the banjo became his major device, honing his abilities playing square dances through the entire western NEW YORK region. At the moment he started mentoring the youthful Earl Scruggs; while Jenkins’ technique bridged the distance between jagged, old-timey selecting and the even more fluid contemporary design, Scruggs quickly surpassed his instructor, forging a completely modernized sound recognized by its subtlety and elegance. Jenkins relocated to Columbia, SC, within the springtime of 1937, quickly becoming a member of a string music group which performed on regional radio train station WIS; regardless of the unavoidable lineup adjustments, the group — later on dubbed the Employed Hands — continued to be energetic for over half of a century. Taking part 1939 was Jenkins’ longtime foil, fiddler Homer “Pappy” Sherrill, a onetime person in the Blue Sky Males; eight years later on the Employed Hands welcomed lead guitarist Julian “Oily” Medlin and bassist Ira Dimmery, adopted in 1955 from the introduction of second guitarist Expenses Rey. This five-piece lineup slice the 1st Employed Hands recordings in 1962, released by Folklyric in 1970 and consequently reissued on Arhoolie as Pioneer from the Bluegrass Banjo. In 1971, Jenkins and Sherrill also documented an LP for Rounder and in 1989 also slice material for Aged Homestead; Jenkins passed away on Apr 30, 1990.

8 In 1946, five versions of "To Each His Own" were listed on Billboard's Top 10 list for one week: recordings by Eddy Howard (No. 1), Freddy Martin, The Ink Spots, The Modernaires and Tony Martin.
