Hailing from NEW YORK, Smokin’ Granny belongs to the strange group of rock and roll bands who made a decision to take prog rock and roll and present it a free of charge funk injection. Commonalities with additional American organizations, like French Television, Volare, and also the N.Con.C.-centered free-form jazz/funk World of Tomorrow, don’t limit the Grannies’ unique stance. Activated around 1993, Smokin’ Granny brought collectively members of earlier NC bands, specifically longtime close friends Todd Barbee, Jeffrey Damon Lindsay, and Brian Preston. Saxophonist Barbee offers performed with organizations within the fringes of avant-garde, just like the impro-jazz Great Neighbours and (very much later on) the Micro-East Collective. Drummer Lindsay documented with Daily World and (once again afterwards) the Accidentals. Bassist Brian K. Preston was also section of Daily Globe. Most of all, all three had been in Freehand, a jazz-prog group who documented one record, Thinking ALOUD… (afterwards reissued by Metaphoric Music Productions). They recruited acoustic guitarist David Oskardmay (once in Chicago with Sunz of Nunz and students of Robert Fripp) and begun to perform live, blending upbeat fusion compositions with an increase of exploratory improvisations. Electric powered guitarist John Heitzenrater curved out the quintet. A concert on the Bat Cave was documented and released being a cassette in 1997 (Smokin’ Granny, aka Live on the Bat Cave) over the group’s very own label, Metaphoric Music Productions. Great reviews in the neighborhood and customized U.S. press prompted the associates to pour a bit more period (and cash) in to the project as well as the Compact disc Sirius Matter (including a lot of the live materials, plus new studio room pieces) arrived in 1999. Because of this record, the group made an appearance being a quartet with Heitzenrater and Volare’s Steve Hatch writing “visitor guitarists” credits. With the Grannies’ second Compact disc (Tarth Shook, 2001) with Volare disbanded, Hatch acquired turn into a full-time member, pressing the group’s audio further into prog rock and roll place. Barbee and Preston also perform jointly in Onomata.
