Along with his soulful tenor vocals and an unerring capability to fuse contemporary gospel with hip-hop sensibilities, Smokie Norful is among the brightest lights on the existing gospel scene. The boy of the African Methodist Episcopal minister, Norful spent his initial 14 years in Muskogee, Alright, where he consumed music which range from sacred gospel towards the secular spirit that was well-known at that time, and both strains would provide him well when he started his professional performing career. By age two he was selecting melodies on piano, by four he was participating in and performing in his father’s cathedral, and by ten he was a highlighted artist on the custom record assembled by way of a local music movie director.
