Along with his soulful tenor vocals and an unerring capability to fuse contemporary gospel with hip-hop sensibilities, Smokie Norful is among the brightest lights on the existing gospel scene. The boy of the African Methodist Episcopal minister, Norful spent his initial 14 years in Muskogee, Alright, where he consumed music which range from sacred gospel towards the secular spirit that was well-known at that time, and both strains would provide him well when he started his professional performing career. By age two he was selecting melodies on piano, by four he was participating in and performing in his father’s cathedral, and by ten he was a highlighted artist on the custom record assembled by way of a local music movie director. Although music was his long lasting passion, Norful rather opted to review history on the College or university of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, ultimately working as a brief history trainer for four years before relocating to Chicago in 1998 to be able to generate a Experts of Divinity level from Garrett Theological Seminary. After his graduation, Norful continued to be in Chicago as an associate pastor in the Rock and roll of Age groups Baptist Chapel and stayed energetic in various chapel choirs, eventually getting the hearing of Joe Anne Brunson, innovator from the Thompson Community Choir, who asked him to sing one of is own original tunes for the choir’s Actual recording, which essentially released Norful’s professional performing profession. His debut single recording, I Need AT THIS POINT YOU, premiered by Chordant in 2002, accompanied by a live recording called Limited Release from EMI Gospel in 2003. Norful offers characterized his music as “metropolitan inspirational,” an apt term which allows him to stretch out the limitations of traditional gospel while still staying accurate to its purpose. EMI Gospel also released Norful’s second single recording, Nothing at all Without You, in 2004. Existence Changing made an appearance in 2006, and in ’09 2009, EMI Gospel released Smokie Norful Live.
