Created in Durban, South Africa in 1989 by vocalist Themba ‘Ncane’ Ngubane. Skeleton surfaced from your ashes of Ngubane’s earlier group Mshoza, another users having been wiped out by gunmen inside a gangland massacre in 1988. Third , Ngubane made a decision to quit music but was influenced to transport on by Joseph Shabalala of Ladysmith Dark Mambazo. Recruiting his sibling ‘Skeleton’ Musa Ngubane (acoustic guitar), plus Mangisi Zondo (keyboards) and drummer Zandile Zumathe he made a decision to explore traditional Zulu ‘Maskanda’ rhythms with this fresh group (called after his sibling’s nickname). Skeleton had been noticed by Sipho Gumede while these were playing a free of charge show around the actions of Durban’s Town Hall and he was impressed enough to recommend these to Robert Trunz, mind from the MELT 2000 label, who asked Skeleton to record in Johannesburg in 1995. The producing self-titled album premiered internationally 3 years later on and featured visitor appearances from additional MELT performers Busi Mhlongo, Dizu Plaatjies (of Amampondo) and Mabi Thobejane, on a couple of stripped-down, cool South African dance music.
