Biography
Brooklyn, NY’s Sir Lord Baltimore were arguably America’s initial bona fide rock music group, as well as the funny matter is, they didn’t even understand it, because the design had yet to determine itself once the music group initial burst onto the picture. And because SLB’s precocious, uncooked skill was offset by their immaturity and utter insufficient business acumen, their budding profession was summarily derailed after simply two generally underrated albums. Therefore, these were cursed to withstand years of obscurity until their music was rediscovered, vindicated, and frequently protected or flat-out copied by many stoner rock and roll bands from the 1990s and beyond. If anything is practical within the ill-fated Sir Lord Baltimore tale, it’s the undeniable fact that the industrial success attained throughout their living was as moderate because the band’s inner-city origins. Vocalist/drummer John Garner, guitarist Louis Dambra, and bassist Gary Justin had been lately graduated from senior high school and got just been rehearsing for a couple months if they auditioned for skill scout Mike Appel, who later help release the career of 1 Bruce Springsteen. Impressed by the band’s undeniable power and chemistry, and guaranteed by Dambra (who got just documented an recording with another group called the Koala) the ferocious riffs he was playing had been in fact not really copped from Jimmy Web page, Appel made a decision to consider the inexperienced youthful trio under his wing. Therefore, after fine-tuning and rearranging their recycleables into a solid batch of tracks, Sir Lord Baltimore started documenting their debut record, Kingdom Arrive, in Western world Orange, NJ, where they apparently impressed a going to Green Floyd and seduced the eye of high-powered musician supervisor Dee Anthony, who squandered little time pressing out Appel and overtaking the group’s day-to-day procedure. Anthony after that commissioned Jimi Hendrix engineer Eddie Kramer to combine the completed Kingdom Come on the renowned guitarist’s very own Electric powered Ladyland studios in Manhattan, before securing a cope with Mercury Information for its discharge in mid-1970. However, mainstream critics and customers of that time period didn’t appear to know what to create of Sir Lord Baltimore’s thundering hard rock and roll (or, for example, those of every other very similar music group, just like the Stooges or the MC5, unless they started in the U.K.), which presciently yielded the very first documented usage of the word “rock” to spell it out this sort of music inside a modern review by Creem journal. Nevertheless, Anthony’s connections in high locations were solid enough to protected SLB opening slot machines on trips with Dark Sabbath (including two evenings in the Fillmore East) and Humble Pie, but maybe a tad prematurely, since it was on-stage that Sir Lord Baltimore’s insufficient encounter and underdeveloped showmanship had been revealed for those to find out, sending them back again to Brooklyn with tails between hip and legs and egos in balance to ponder their following move. This might ultimately entail the addition of Louis’ sibling Joey Dambra on second acoustic guitar, before the recording of the second, eponymous recording, in 1971, in which a concerted work was designed to both rein within the band’s crazy energy and broaden its audio into more intensifying realms, with some achievement but nowhere near just as much spontaneous combustion captured inside the grooves. So when these “improvements” also dropped short of industrial objectives, Sir Lord Baltimore had been unceremoniously fallen by Mercury and remaining to their personal devices soon thereafter by their fickle Svengali. The bandmembers still started working on songs with expectations of getting another interested label, but finally quit the battle in 1976 following a fresh agreement for a rumored third recording didn’t materialize, resigning themselves to some life outside rock and roll & move as their information collected dirt in cutout bins. However the eventual rise of hard rock and roll and rock and, specifically, its middle-’90s offshoot, stoner rock and roll, finally sparked a retroactive reevaluation of Sir Lord Baltimore’s function, and vindicated the today middle-aged supporters and music enthusiasts who acquired generally championed their trigger. In addition, it jolted John Garner and Louis Dambra (today a pastor ministering to homeless households in LA) away from their musical pension in 2006, with the purpose of recording the materials designed for that never-made third record. Bassist Gary Justin hadn’t found his device in years and dropped to participate, but several program players, including journeyman Tony Franklin, had been drafted to greatly help surface finish Sir Lord Baltimore III Organic, which was provided on the market through Sir Lord Baltimore’s public website, most of 30 years after their separation. Garner offers since fielded many offers to execute select reunion displays within the U.S. and overseas, but has however to come quickly to terms that could bring Sir Lord Baltimore back again to the live stage.

| There are so many people who hate themselves, and I realized early on that you can't change your looks. You have to live with what you've got. And you have to give yourself credit every morning by saying "yes!" -- and that'll help you. But if you dis yourself every morning, it's not good for you mentally, and it won't help your appearance. It's not that I love my looks. But ... it's me. And I cherish the blessing that there's only one me in this world. I'm happy about that fact, and it shines through sometimes. |
| Yeah, prep is very important -- for me, at least. I like to improvise. But if you're the only one improvising, then you can f**k it up for other actors in the scene if you're the only one coming up with new things. Sometimes it can be good, and the director tells you to do something to stir or awaken the actors whom you're playing with, or they do it to you and you have a great reaction. But I think it's the directors who especially need to prepare their work. A lot of young directors today work on digital and run the cameras 24/7, and it's tedious for an actor to do the same scene over and over again. When a director is prepped, you feel very secure, and you become a better actor. He knows what he wants and he's like, "Okay, let's move on to the next scene." |
| They [the Coen Brothers] have an obsession with pancakes. It's a Midwestern thing, I guess. I had never had pancakes. I grew up in Sweden, and I'm not a big fan of pancakes. |
| I've done Hamlet, and no one talks about Hamlet killing five people. No one even talks about sending him to jail. And it's the same thing for a character like Abruzzi. I think people root for him because he's just punishing people who are bad humans in a way. Always in movies and TV, in drama we always root for those characters. Even if they have killed four or five people, they have killed people that we've really disliked. They have done us a service. And he's such a character. That's why I've tried to keep him very Shakespearean. --talking about his character John Abruzzi from Prison Break (2005) |
| Upon receiving the Fargo (1996) script: "Where are all my lines?!" |
| "I was a foreigner, and I knew that most of the parts I would be offered would be foreigners. I knew I could not compete with Bruce Willis, Tom Cruise, and Nicolas Cage, and so I did not fight it. I saw the path I was destined to walk and decided to do the parts that would be offered to me as well as I possibly could." --on his initial career outlook when he first came to the U.S. to act. |
| "I liked the way that film took realistic events and added this slightly out-of-kilter perspective. My character in that film was, in one sense, a caricature of a killer, but there was also a sense of mystery surrounding him that captured the imagination. Fargo (1996) was an exciting experience for me largely because of the approach the Coen brothers took. It was the antithesis of Armageddon (1998). It was low-budget, a very guerrilla-style approach to filmmaking that made its own rules and was very specific in what it was trying to accomplish." --on Fargo (1996). |
| "I grew up in northern Sweden in a very small village and this is exactly the same. It's very strange. It's two hundred small villages linked together. Living here as compared to living in Tokyo, where I lived, or in London or New York, this is so much more like living in the country. You go to bed early and you get up early, even if you're not working. You get up early with the sun and go to bed with the sun. That is much more rural kind of living and it suits me so much better than New York." - On Los Angeles. |
