A self-taught guitarist, Behrend studied piano, structure and conducting on the Klindworth-Scharwenka Conservatory. He debuted in Leipzig in 1952 and continued to create many world travels. His speciality is within avant-garde music, and many composers, including Becker and Penderecki possess written functions for him. He’s known for his simple technique as well as for his inclusion in his repertoire of well-known pieces. He’s the main German guitarist of his period.
