Though often from the NEW YORK hardcore scene from the mid-’90s, Change by no means quite participate in their contemporaries, and were even more likely to play a ballad than to kick more than a mic stand. Their audio fuses complex period adjustments and manic break-outs with blatant pop sensibilities; a mixture which received them a faithful underground target audience, culminating inside a leap to a significant label in 1997. Originally created in their indigenous NY by vocalist/guitarist Joshua Loucka, bassist Brandon Simpson, and drummer Samantha Maloney, Change proceeded to go the DIY path, playing shows whenever you can and documenting an EP, Pathos (1994), along with a full-length recording, Spacesuit (1995), on indie label Equivalent Vision Information. While Loucka’s monotone tone of voice could develop tiresome sometimes, both releases demonstrated a firm understand on the heavier and lighter components of rock, a mixture best recognized on Spacesuit’s “DECORATE,” which veers from ballad to rocker with amazing ease. Even in that competitive scene, Change stood out, and in 1997 had been authorized to Columbia Information. With the help of guitarist Tag Holcomb, the music group evened out their audio (the multi-layer acoustic guitar focus on their first albums was by no means quite recognized in concert), they released ENTER in nov that 12 months, and continuing to tour aggressively.
