Biography

Post-bop alto saxophonist Sherman Irby was created and elevated in Tuscaloosa, AL; inspired by his family members to understand music, he originally thought we would play the viola, shifting to some instruments including electric guitar and piano before finally buying the sax as a teenager, soon getting infatuated with jazz. While participating in Clark-Atlanta School, Irby studied traditional music, but additionally was a standout within the school’s jazz orchestra. Despite graduating using a level in music education, he refused to enter teaching, rather working some dead-end day careers to be able to spend his complete energies to executing. After honing his abilities playing behind Atlanta region music artists including ex-Art Blakey pianist Johnny O’Neal and trumpeter Eddie Adams, in 1994 Irby recognized a gig carrying out on a cruise liner; after near 3 years of playing at ocean, he relocated to NEW YORK, where he produced the after-hours jam program scene in the Greenwich Town club Smalls. With time he and his music group — pianist Wayne Harm, bassist Eric Revis, and drummer Dana Murray — became Smalls regulars, and it had been there that Irby was found out by Blue Notice; his 1st LP for the label, BACK TO WHERE IT STARTED, made an appearance in 1997. After support famous brands Roy Hargrove, Wynton Marsalis, and Marcus Roberts, he lower his second single work, Big Mama’s Biscuits, in 1998. Irby consequently founded his personal Black Warrior Information label, by which he released Dark Warrior (2001), Trust (2004), and Body organ Starter (2006).
