Although he has achieved some reputation as the leader from the International Association of Jazz Teachers so when a teacher, Shelly Berg’s powerhouse piano performing has so far been generally overlooked because of him not saving often enough. Motivated by his dad, trumpeter Jay Berg, Shelly, at age six, was recognized on the Cleveland Institute of Music. He began playing appropriately when he was 13, playing both traditional music and jazz. Shifting to Houston along with his family members when he was 15, Berg performed frequently with Arnett Cobb and different all-stars transferring through city. He rejected employment with Woody Herman to complete his education. After graduating from the College or university of Houston, Berg performed locally with a number of groups, like the Brass Connection. He became a reputed music educator at San Jacinto University in Tx before shifting to LA in 1991 to instruct at U.S.C. Shelly Berg shows up occasionally in LA clubs, often using Bill Watrous’ groupings, and in 1996 he documented an excellent trio established for DMP.
