Previously of early-’80s synth pop emulators the Clears, Shelby Bryant is really a Memphis, TN, high-school math teacher who loves to test out four-track-inspired songwriting about his away hours. Surviving in the Bible Belt offers lent a thumping gospel consistency to his less-earthy inclinations. His debut recording Cloud Wow Music took its cues through the whimsical trippiness of music artists like Donovan as well as the light, tinkly melodies of Vince Guaraldi.
