Although not really a huge name in the jazz world, veteran really difficult bop pianist Sam Dockery continues to be well-respected over the Philadelphia jazz picture because the early ’50s. Over time, Dockery has appreciated a reputation to be an extremely hard-swinging, straight-ahead participant; Bud Powell can be a major impact on Dockery, as are Thelonious Monk and Artwork Tatum. Dockery, who’s originally from Lawnside, NJ but provides spent a lot of his lifestyle around Philly, could very well be most widely known for the entire year he was with Artwork Blakey & the Jazz Messengers. Dockery, a regular visitor to NEW YORK, was with drummer Blakey’s Jazz Messengers in 1956 and 1957; he was Blakey’s pianist after Horace Sterling silver and Kenny Drew Sr. and before Junior Mance or Bobby Timmons. During his stay static in that renowned group, Dockery was section of a five-man lineup that also included trumpeter Costs Hardman, alto saxophonist Jackie McLean (pre-Blue Take note) and bassist Spanky DeBrest; sometimes, that quintet became a sextet when Chicago icon Johnny Griffin was added on tenor sax. But Blakey wasn’t the just well-known jazz musician Dockery used during his youngsters; the later ’50s and early ’60s discovered him being highlighted in Philly tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath’s quartet, which utilized Buster Williams on bass and Specifications Wright on drums. And on the way, Dockery also crossed pathways with heavyweight improvisers which range from trumpeter Clifford Dark brown (four years before Dockery’s association with Artwork Blakey & the Jazz Messengers) to saxophonists Sonny Stitt, Benny Golson and Stan Getz. Regrettably, Dockery was not recorded nearly normally as he must have been; in an ideal globe, any pianist of his caliber could have an enormous catalog. non-etheless, Dockery was a fixture for the Philly jazz picture through the entire ’60s, ’70s and ’80s.
