Rudy Williams

A hard-blowing alto saxophonist, Rudy Williams produced many information in the ’30s,’40s and ’50s with combos and big rings. He was most widely known for his tenure in The Savoy Sultans. Williams started playing saxophone at 12, and finally emphasized alto, though he also performed baritone and tenor. He became a member of Al Cooper’s Savoy Sultans in 1937 and was highlighted on many recordings, included in this the strike “Small Sally Drinking water” in 1939. He used Hot Lips Web page, Luis Russell, Chris Columbus and John Kirby in the ’40s, and led rings in the middle and past due ’40s in Boston and NY. Williams used Tadd Dameron in 1948, after that led rings in Boston in the past due ’40s and early ’50s. He caused Illinois Jacquet and Gene Ammons in California, and afterwards toured china and taiwan with Oscar Pettiford’s music group and documented in Howard McGhee’s group. Upon time for America, Williams led rings, and documented with Dud Bascomb and Don Byas, Babs Gonzales, Dameron and Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson, Gene Ammons and Bennie Green, and Johnny Hodges. He doesn’t have any periods under his very own name on Compact disc, but could be noticed on different discs offering Jacquet, McGhee, Ammons, yet others.
