With just one single inexpensive demonstration tape, Royal Fingerbowl, a trio from New Orleans, attracted the eye of a fresh York record firm. They are hailed among the greatest bands to emerge from New Orleans because the early-’90s introduction of MUCH BETTER THAN Ezra. Made up of Alex McMurray on electric guitar and vocals, Kevin O’Day on drums, and Andy Wolf on bass and vocals, the music group plays lilting, frequently waltz-tempo blues and jazz. McMurray’s tone of voice appears like a combination between Tom Waits and Louis Armstrong, and he acts because the band’s key songwriter. A transplanted New Jerseyan, McMurray admits he will take a lot of his motivation from the items he views in New Orleans’ nightlife, so the lyrics in the band’s debut for TVT Information, Content Birthday Sabo!, (1997), possess a strong feeling of place. Like Waits’ people, the people in McMurray’s music tend to be people in the periphery of mainstream culture. The music group formed in Apr, 1995, but all three associates have already been playing in various other bands throughout the Crescent City’s Faubourg Marigny membership scene for a long time. All three associates relocated to New Orleans for educational reasons — McMurray from NJ, drummer O’Day from Lafayette, LA, and bassist Wolf from Michigan. Wolf have been inside a salsa music group known as Mas Mamones; O’Day used the brand new Orleans Klezmer All-Stars, and McMurray spent amount of time in numerous funk, spirit, reggae, and rock and roll rings around Bourbon Road. The music group started to attract ever-growing crowds in the Dragon’s Den, a golf club on Frenchman Road, as well as the band’s demonstration tape, recorded within an bare bar throughout the day, captured the ears of many record businesses. Their demonstration was almost released by one label as their 1st album. Although an average Royal Fingerbowl arranged includes a large amount of harder-edged rock and roll stylings, jazz and blues are in the bottom of everything the music group will. The blues and jazz progressions and forms root the rest are by the bucket load on the debut album. 3 years after their critically acclaimed debut, the music group released Greyhound Afternoons.
