Home / Biography / Roxanne

Roxanne isn’t so much a single artist but an over-all tag directed at several woman rappers and performers who made independently released reactions to U.T.F.O.’s strike solitary “Roxanne, Roxanne.” The music was condescending toward a female called “Roxanne,” and stirred up quite the controversy among woman listeners. The first-known response was from Roxanne Shante, who caused maker Marley Marl to create possibly the greatest response, “Roxanne’s Revenge.” Abruptly, new Roxannes had been popping up just about everywhere, spawning over 100 known singles from a variety of rappers. Another reactor, a female calling herself the true Roxanne, built a career over declaring the rights towards the Roxanne name with an individual called “THE TRUE Roxanne.” And several, many more made an appearance either beneath the Roxanne name or additional goofy titles like Roxanne’s Doctor and Roxanne’s Psychiatrist. The trend died down following the marketplace was flooded with these singles, but at least two main careers developed from the short-lived fad.
