Ronnie Gilbert was zero stranger to achievement or even to controversy. Blessed to working-class Jewish parents in NEW YORK, she refused to take part in her 1940s high-school mature play because she was persuaded from the racial injustice from the minstrel present theme. In the 1950s, Gilbert melded her joyous contralto using the radical voices of Pete Seeger, Lee Hays, and Fred Hellerman within their celebrated group the Weavers, which brought folk rhythms and public activism towards the mainstream, whilst being top quality as subversives within the hysteria from the McCarthy period and blacklisted. Gilbert fulfilled, was motivated by, and sang with Holly Near, documenting Lifeline (live, 1983) and Performing along with you (1986) with Near, and Harp (1985) with Near, Arlo Guthrie, and Pete Seeger. Gilbert’s debut single release, The Soul Is Free of charge (1985) premiered within the feminist Redwood label; the live Like Will Find a means adopted, in 1989, within the Abbe Alice label, the collaborative item of a fresh alliance with supervisor/partner Donna Korones. In 1990, Gilbert offered the keynote conversation in the annual meeting from the Association of Women’s Music and Tradition (AWMAC). She also performed a one-woman theatre piece on the life span of the famous American labor activist Mom Jones. Ronnie Gilbert passed away in Mill Valley, California on June 6, 2015 at age 88.
