Rolf Ericson

Among Sweden’s finest trumpeters, Rolf Ericson played within the U.S. frequently enough to get a strong popularity. He began on trumpet when he was eight and, after hearing Louis Armstrong enjoy in Stockholm in 1933, he turned to jazz. Ericson documented in Sweden with Alice Babs among others beginning in 1945, transferred to NY in 1947, and used Charlie Barnet (1949) and Woody Herman (1950). After time for Sweden in 1950, he documented as a head with Arne Domnérus and Leonard Feather’s Swinging Swedes. He also toured and documented with Charlie Parker. Back the U.S. during 1953-1956, Ericson used the big rings of Charlie Spivak, Harry Adam, the Dorsey Brothers, and Les Dark brown and was using the Lighthouse All-Stars. In 1956, he toured Sweden and used Ernestine Anderson and Lars Gullin. During 1956-1965 within the U.S., Ericson was with Dexter Gordon, Harold Property, Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson (1960-1961), Friend High, Benny Goodman, Gerry Mulligan, and Charles Mingus, amongst others. There have been also occasional trips with Duke Ellington during 1963-1971 and a lot of freelance careers. In 1971, he resolved in Germany like a studio room musician, but Ericson came back towards the U.S. many times over the following couple of years. His warm firmness and innovative yet melodic design were always regarded as an asset.
