Roland Hanna


A talented pianist with a method diverse enough to match into golf swing, bop, and much more adventurous configurations, Roland Hanna was among the last within an impressive type of great pianists who emerged in Detroit after Globe Battle II (including Hank Jones, Barry Harris, and Tommy Flanagan). After offering in the Military and learning music at Eastman and Juilliard, Hanna produced a solid impression using Benny Goodman (1958). He caused Charles Mingus for an interval in 1959, and continued to generally lead his personal trios. Hanna was a fundamental element of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis orchestra (1967-1974), and in 1974 helped discovered the brand new York Jazz Quartet (with Frank Wess).
