Riptides

Created in Brisbane, Australia in 1979, the Riptides became a cult strap across the coast with browse audiences, eventually arriving in Sydney where they truly became the ‘following big thing’. The original line-up comprised Tag Callaghan (vocals), Dennis Cantwell (drums), Scott Matheson (acoustic guitar, changed in 1981 by Michael Hiron) and Andrew Leitch (keyboards/acoustic guitar). Their melodies and pop tunes had been gems, but in some way the band didn’t take the next phase to the very best rung and, by 1983, experienced split after many line-up changes. Primary songwriter Tag Callaghan later created GANGgajang in 1984 and created an excellent single recording, Sailors And Mermaids (1988). Riptides re-form sometimes for national trips, that are well went to, suggesting that this band experienced charisma only if lacking in industrial success.
