Rida Johnson Young

b. 28 Feb 1869, Baltimore, Maryland, USA, d. 8 Might 1926, Stamford, Connecticut, USA. Popular on Broadway as article writer and lyricist, Youthful’s play Dark brown Of Harvard (1906, filmed in 1926), included her music ‘When Love Is definitely Youthful’. She had written The Kids Of Business ‘B’ as well as the Lancers (both 1907), accompanied by Glorious Betty (1908) as well as the Lottery Guy (1909). Next emerged Ragged Robin (1910), created in cooperation with Rita Olcott, incidental music by Frederic K. Logan. Teen wrote reserve and lyrics for Naughty Marietta (1910), starring Emma Trentini and Orville Harrold, which went at the brand new York Theater for 136 shows. The music was by Victor Herbert and among the music had been ‘Tramp, Tramp, Tramp’, ‘Naughty Marietta’, ‘It Hardly ever, Never COULD BE Like’, ‘If I Had been Anybody Else But Me’, ‘’Neath The Southern Moon’, ‘Sugary By And By’, ‘Live For Today’, ‘I’m Falling DEEPLY IN LOVE WITH Somebody’ and ‘Ah, Sugary Mystery Of Lifestyle’. Young composed Barry Of Ballymore (1911, music by Chauncey Olcott and Ernest R. Ball), Macushla (1912, music by Ball, lyrics by J. Keirn Brennan), The Crimson Petticoat (1912), The Isle O’ Dreams (1913, collaborating on lyrics with Olcott and George Graff, to music by Ball), THE LADY AS WELL AS THE Pennant (1913), Shameen Dhu and Female High end (both 1914), Captain Kidd, Jr. and Her Soldier Guy (both 1916), His Small Widows and Maytime (both 1917). The previous, created with W.C. Duncan, was modified by Firth Shephard and staged in London as Female Good luck (1927). The last mentioned ran for nearly 500 shows, and Youthful’s lyrics to Sigmund Romberg’s music included ‘The Street To Heaven’ and ‘Will You Keep in mind (Sweetheart)?’, the last mentioned the only melody retained for the 1937 film starring Nelson Eddy And Jeanette MacDonald. In 1918 Teen composed Sometime and reserve and lyrics for Small Simplicity, the last mentioned’s music by Augustus Barratt. In the 20s Teen composed the play Small Old NY (1920, filmed in 1940), the musicals Orange Blossoms (1922) as well as the Dream Gal (1924), both in cooperation with Herbert, the last mentioned including the melody ‘My Dream Woman, I Loved You Long Ago’. Pursuing Youthful’s loss of life, Naughty Marietta liked Broadway revivals in 1929 and 1931, several road and local productions, and in 1935 a film edition starred MacDonald and Eddy. A few of Youthful’s work originated into movies and she also made up the soundtrack rating for Mom Machree (1928).
