Reverend J.M. Gates

The Baptist preacher J.M. Gates was perhaps one of the most prolifically documented black performers of the first 20th hundred years, with over 200 edges on wax between your middle-’20s and his loss of life in 1940 (he once documented 23 game titles in weekly, at only two periods). His sermons and musical amounts appeared on a number of brands (Victor, Bluebird, Okeh, Gennett), though Gates frequently re-recorded his most widely used sermons — “Death’s Dark Train Is Arriving,” “Oh Loss of life Where Can be Thy Sting,” “Goin’ to Die using the Staff in my own Hands” — for multiple brands. Delivered in 1885, Gates ministerd at Atlanta’s Calvary Cathedral and first documented in 1926. From April, he documented almost 100 edges by the finish of the entire year. Understandably, his result slowed slightly through the remaining late ’20s, as well as the development of the fantastic Depression led to a four-year period off information. He came back in 1934, and documented about 20 even more edges until his loss of life in 1941. Professionals estimation that Gates documented at least 25 % of all sermons that made an appearance before 1943.
