Renée Manning

Much like Ernestine Anderson, Marlena Shaw, and Dee Dee Bridgewater, Renee Manning is really a gutsy, soulful, jazz vocalist that has blues and R&B leanings. On uptempo materials and jazz blues figures, the indigenous New Yorker could be brassy, intense, gritty and hard-swinging. But she’s no problem becoming delicate and introspective on ballads. Actually, those who pay attention carefully to Manning’s ballad shows may, sometimes, hear traces of Billie Visit to her phrasing. But Manning certainly has a larger voice, and general, she is a more robust kind of vocalist than Lady Day time — if Manning was a tenor saxophonist, she’d be nearer to Houston Person or Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis than Stan Getz. And had been she a male vocalist, Manning will be in comparison to Joe Williams or Kevin Mahogany a lot more than Chet Baker. Although she actually is bop-oriented and it has been affected by Carmen McRae and Ella Fitzgerald, not absolutely all of her affects are bop affects. Holiday, needless to say, arrived of jazz’s pre-bop period, and Manning sometimes shows a knowledge of jazz-influenced traditional blues performers like Bessie Smith, Ida Cox, and Ma Rainey. (Among the tunes that she loves to perform live is definitely Blue Lu Barker’s risqué “NOT Feel My Lower leg”). Given birth to and elevated in Brooklyn NY, Manning went to New York’s Music and Artwork SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL as an adolescent and in the ’70s continued to be used on albums by hard bop/soul-jazz players like tenor saxman David “Fathead” Newman as well as the past due cornetist Nat Adderley (alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley’s sibling). Manning’s most noticeable association, however, arrived in the ’80s, when she began a five-year gig like a presented vocalist for the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra. In 1991, Manning documented her first single album, As Is definitely, for Ken Music, a little self-employed jazz label located in NY. Subsequently, Ken released her second recording, Uhm…Uhm…Uhmmmm, which contained recordings from 1986, 1989, and 1991.
