Red Army Chorus

Biography

Probably the most prestigious vocal group in Russia, the Red Army Choir was renamed in 1978 after Boris Alexandrov, the troupe’s director from 1946 until 1986. A big group having a man choir, blended dance group, and orchestra, the Crimson Army Choir enticed international interest when it got first place on the Paris General Exhibition in 1937. A lot of the group’s repertoire, including such music as “WE HAVE BEEN the Crimson Cavalry” and “Tune from the Volga Boatmen,” provides handed down into Russian folklore. In overview of the choir’s self-titled 1994 record, recorded beneath the path of conductor Victor Federov and released in the Naxos label, American Record Information wrote “Naxos’ audio is rich, complete, vibrant, and large — similar to the choir itself.”
