Ray Noble

Biography

Ray Noble had an unusual career. Perhaps most obviously as the author of “THE Considered You,” “I Hadn’t Anyone Right up until You,” “The Contact of Your Lip area,” “Goodnight Sweetheart” and “Cherokee” (in addition to leader from the orchestra which supported the favorite radio display of Edgar Bergen), Noble was a significant bandleader within the 1930s but he under no circumstances appeared to reach his potential. Classically-trained like a pianist, Noble was interested in dance music and he earned a big music group arranging competition sponsored by Melody Manufacturer in Britain. He became the musical movie director for the key HMV label (1929-34) and led some recordings along with his New Mayfair Dance Orchestra (1930-34) which frequently presented the vocals of Al Bowlly. The music was dance-oriented with hook impact of jazz. Building on his well-known achievement, in 1935 Noble found america where he led his finest orchestra during 1935-37, frequently playing in the Rainbow Space. His music group included for a while trombonist-arranger Glenn Miller (who was simply very affected by Noble’s strategy and arranging design, “borrowing” “Moonlight Serenade” from Noble’s publication), Bud Freeman, Pee Wee Erwin, Charlie Spivak, Johnny Mintz, Claude Thornhill and can Bradley. However following the orchestra split up in 1937, Noble became a lot more popular as an emcee on radio and ultimately for his depiction of the pompous and foolish Englishman in humor bits. Furthermore to those tasks, Noble sometimes led dance rings but from the mid-’50s he previously mainly retired. Few today most likely understand who the Ray Noble was that constructed “Cherokee!”

#Fact
1 Noble came to the U.S. in 1935, due to popular demand for his recordings. However, it was Glenn Miller who put together his new orchestra, hiring trumpet players Charlie Spivak and Peewee Erwin, trombonist Will Bradley, tenor saxophonist Bud Freeman, clarinettist Johnny Mince and pianist Claude Thornhill. Miller stayed with Noble for eighteen months, also doing some of the arranging, before leaving to form his own band.
2 The Ray Noble Orchestra was based at one of New York's most prestigious venues, the Rainbow Room. It gained national exposure on the Burns & Allen and Charlie McCarthy radio shows. Noble had recording contracts with HMV, Brunswick, Columbia and Victor.
3 Noble's band specialised in ballads. His main vocalist was Al Bowlly, who was killed during a German air raid on London in April 1941.
4 The son of a doctor.
5 Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1996.
6 Multi-talented composer/band leader/actor/pianist. His best-known compositions include "The Touch of Your Lips," "I Hadn't Anyone Till You," "Goodnight, Sweetheart," and his theme song, "The Very Thought of You."

8 Inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 1987.
