After abandoning a military career due to injury, Benatzky earned a doctorate in German philology and studied music with Mottl. He started writing tune lyrics and executed in Munich, ultimately working being a director for the cabaret in Vienna, where he also composed music and lyrics for Josma Selim, his upcoming wife. He constructed several operettas, like the revue-style operettas Casanova and Im weissen Rössl (Light Horse Inn). Furthermore to his function for the stage, Benatzky composed many film ratings and over 5000 music.
