Radu Malfatti

Austrian composer and trombonist Radu Malfatti is probably the leaders in redefining the avant-garde as truly on-the-edge art. Abandoning many improvisational music as as well regulated, Malfatti offers pushed the limitations of composition in to the realms of lengthy reams of silence. Malfatti was created in Innsbruck, Austria, in 1943 and performed jazz in Amsterdam and Aachen. He relocated to London in 1972 where he caused many esteemed music artists within the jazz and improv picture included in this Elton Dean’s Ninesense and Chris McGregor’s Brotherhood of Breathing. Meanwhile, he created Nicra with Nick Evans. During this time period and his moves and recordings through European countries through the 1980s, he started to wheel of standard improvisation and the guidelines that appeared to govern it. Malfatti’s notion of shifting beyond standard improv were recognized within the 1993 piece “Pass away Temperatur Der Bedeutung” for single trombone. The piece, somewhat over half-an-hour long, is made up soley of brief blasts of trombones among long stretches of silences. In 1994, he became a member of the Wandelweiser Group situated in Berlin. An ensemble of composers and performers thinking about integrating silence as main areas of musical functions, Malfatti appeared to match right in. Nevertheless, his collaboration using the group was rather brief. In 1997, he released Beinhaltung with analog keyboardist Thomas Lehn and violinist Phil Durrnat. In 1998 the trio released a live documenting, Dach.
