Playero

Playero was an integral number in the dissemination of reggaeton during its formative period in the 1990s in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Generally billed as Playero DJ, though maybe most widely known as DJ Playero, he was most importantly a mixtape purveyor. From the first ’90s, he created some mixtapes that synthesized hip-hop and reggae rhythms with Spanish-language freestyling (i.e., on-the-spot MCing, toasting, rapping, performing, etc.). These tapes circulated across the barrios of San Juan and had been highly important upon the era that would continue to define reggaeton in the arriving decade. For example, Daddy Yankee got his focus on Playero, debuting on Playero, Vol. 37, that was documented in a little studio in another of Puerto Rico’s caseríoperating-system (i.e., casing tasks) and was originally released in 1992. Playero was an aspiring maker at that time, with credits including focus on the seminal compilation Dancehall Reggaespañol (1991, Columbia Information), furthermore to production use 3-2 Obtain Funky (3-2 Obtain Funky, 1993; Come back from the Funky Types, 1994), Ranking Rock (Different Designs, 1995), Wiso G (Estoy Aqui, 1996), and Wendellman (Wendellman, 1996). Through the past due ’90s, as the proto-reggaeton design began to develop popular because of the Sound, a club-based collective (DJ Negro, DJ Nelson, Tony Contact, Ivy Queen, Baby Rasta & Gringo, et al.) that released a long-running group of CDs, Playero started reissuing his previous mixtapes from the first to middle-’90s. He also documented new types, issuing them via BM Information aswell. Playero en Dvd movie: Su Trayectoria (2003) was the culmination of the activity, looking to concrete his legacy among the essential reggaeton pioneers.
