Biography

Innovative improviser and woodwind participant Piotr Michalowski was created January 9, 1948, in Woking, England, but was raised in Poland. A mainly self-taught musician, his reference to music started during his teenage years as he discovered electric guitar and drums. Being a high-school pupil he performed drums for a normal Dixieland jazz combo in Warsaw. After participating in the School of Warsaw from 1965-1968, he found the U.S., earning a master’s in 1972 and his Ph.D. in 1976 in Near Eastern research at Yale School, followed by analysis fellowships at Harvard as well as the School of Pa, and an helper professorship at U.C.L.A. He just started playing woodwinds afterwards in lifestyle, having started primary clarinet lessons with Ira Schulman whilst in LA, and was motivated by improviser Vinny Golia. Michalowski’s primary full-time work is within Old Near Eastern Dialects & Civilization Research, leading him to instruct at the School of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He’s an extensively released writer in his field, in addition to in jazz music being a columnist, reviewer, and liner be aware and feature article writer. In Ann Arbor, he became interested in functionality, going for a few lessons with regional saxophonists Paul Vornhagen and Vincent York. He was also over the bandstand with David Swain’s II-V-I Orchestra, and from then on spent a couple of years in a criteria trio and quartet with bassist Pat Smith. While a reliable jazz player, 100 % pure improvising was what he wished to pursue, therefore he took professional classes from Trent Kynaston, Ned Rothenberg, and Andrew Bishop. After that he became a member of the School of Michigan’s Innovative Arts Orchestra, aimed by Ed Sarath. This led him to some cooperation with Sarah Weaver’s audio painting orchestra Weave, bassist Adam Ilgenfritz, & most significantly, violinist Mike Khoury. Michalowski was also an associate of the innovative improvising globe ensemble Sublingual as well as the group Babardah, and may be the proprietor from the Abzu record label. As he extended his horizons, he also elevated his arsenal of musical instruments, playing soprano, sopranino, baritone, and tenor saxophones, soprano and bass clarinets, and C and alto flutes.
