Pierre de la Rue

In a day and time when professional musicians flung themselves from court to international court looking for probably the most lucrative income and perquisites, Pierre de La Rue’s temperament was marked even more by loyalty and effort. Unlike a lot of his contemporaries in the so-called “Josquin era” of music artists, La Rue may do not have adopted the skill drain through the North to Italy, as soon as he had gradually worked his method up into among the finest musical organizations in European countries, he remained. This consummate professional musician, ordained towards the deaconate, had written copious levels of music (30 or even more people, with at least two dozen motets and the same amount of chansons) while evidently caring for the indegent in the name of Christ. La Rue’s delivery in Tournai can’t be documented due to the destruction of this city’s information in World Battle II, but his early positions of work have already been rediscovered. The initial record phone calls him a tenor (adult) at St. Goedele in Brussels in 1469-1470, indicating a birthdate in the first 1450s. The tenor “Pieter vander straten” after that proceeded to St. Jacob’s in Ghent (during 1471 and 1472) and Onze Lieve Vrouw in Niewpoort (departing by 1477). He’s known to been employed by at an unidentified cathedral in Cologne sooner or later, and may have got spent time between 1482 and 1485 on the Cathedral in Siena, Italy. The Italian work, however, seems doubtful on musical grounds, as few traces of Italian designs come in his music, no Italian manuscript resources from enough time contain any parts by him. In 1489, at the very least, La Rue started portion a confraternity in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, that he would move around in 1492 to his “tenured” placement using the Hapsburg-Burgundian chapel. Emperor Maximilian I had taken La Rue in to the chapel he was rebuilding for his kid Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy (1493-1506). He offered Philip throughout his reign, after that sang for Philip’s widow Juana in Spain until 1508. After that time, La Rue continued to be in Hapsburg provider, as court vocalist for Marguerite of Austria in Mechlin from 1508 till 1514 and briefly for future years Emperor Charles V himself. In this provider, he appears to have travelled relatively, conference Isaac, Févin, and most likely Josquin on vacations to Spain; Alexander Agricola sang with him in Philip’s chapel from 1500-1506. He also continuing structure apace; Marguerite kept his music in specifically high esteem, comissioning two complex manuscript amounts of his public aswell as including a lot of his chansons in her personal chansonniers. After 25 % hundred years of Hapsburg provider, La Rue retired to Courtrai in 1516, produced his will afterwards that calendar year, and passed away in 1518. His epitaph lauds his musical provider (erroneously read to add Hungary and Ireland), but also commemorates his virtue.
