Pierre Bastien

Mechanised composer Pierre Bastien was created in Paris in 1953; while at the University or college of Sorbonne he analyzed French and 18th hundred years literature but constantly harbored a fascination for experimental music, specifically the task of John Cage, and upon graduating published for ballet and string quartet. While composing for choreographer Dominique Bagouet’s ballet Tartine, in 1986 Bastien put together his 1st music-generating machine from a turntable engine, a cymbal along with a Meccano erector arranged; subsequent projects extended upon the idea, culminating within the conclusion of his Meccano Orchestra, a bit where nine traditional tools — included in this a Moroccan rebab, a Yugoslavian mandolin, a Senegalese kora along with a Javanese angklung — are performed by robotic contraptions rigged from motors and playthings, filled with Bastien improvising on trumpet or violin.
