Phyrework was an obscure, little-known spirit/funk clothing that recorded for Mercury in 1978. That calendar year, Mercury released the band’s self-titled debut record, which was made by Con-Funk-Shun guitarist Michael Cooper. Although Con-Funk-Shun was big at that time, Phyrework fell between your breaks and received almost no interest. The LP included several examples of challenging, hard-driving funk such as the Bar-Kays, although its primary emphasis was even, advanced soul-pop and tranquil surprise music. When Phyrework didn’t sell, Mercury fell the seven-member music group, which never documented a second record. The associates of Phyrework included lead vocalist Clarence Pitts, guitarist Willie Smith, bassist Gerald Calhoun, keyboardist Frank Hames, trumpeter Jim Foster, saxophonist Costs Eden, and drummer John Bryant.
