British composer Philip Gates analyzed at Millfield College in Somerset and later on at Queen’s College, Oxford; his primary instructor was Phyllis Sellick. He provides published several single pieces for blowing wind equipment, a string quartet and piano quintet, the brass piece Crossing Jordan (2002), and many other parts. Gates’ music is certainly referred to as “[placing] great importance in the tonal and melodic areas of music, sketching motivation from many different styles from folk music to jazz.”
