Phil Upchurch

A prolific guitarist who’s comfortable using blues, spirit, R&B, and jazz, Phil Upchurch is a prominent body in Chicago music circles because the mid-’50s. He originally did freelance periods with such music artists as Jerry Butler before getting home guitarist for Chess. Upchurch’s delicate, often cool chording, riffs, and licks had been heard on many produces by such performers because the Dells, Howlin’ Wolf, Gene Chandler, and Muddy Waters. He often teamed with drummer Maurice Light, who later going Earth, Breeze & Fireplace. He produced the Phil Upchurch Combo in the first ’60s, and acquired a hit using the instrumental “You Can’t SIT BACK” in 1961. They do some follow-up singles, but non-e equaled the original record’s achievement. Upchurch did many soul-jazz and funk schedules for such brands as Sue and Cadet within the middle- and past due ’60s. He agreed upon with Blue Thumb within the ’70s and divide his time taken between sessions using the Crusaders and Ben Sidran and producing his very own albums. Tommy LiPuma created Darkness, Darkness and Lovin’ Feelin in 1972 and 1973. Upchurch do one LP for Creed Taylor’s Kudu label in 1975, Upchurch Tennyson, with pianist/vocalist Tennyson Stephens. He came back to studio function, but recorded being a head for Palladin in 1985, Ichiban in 1991, and Ridgetop in 1995 and 1997. He continues to be active being a program musician and bandleader, coming back in 1999 with Rhapsody & Blues. Inform the Truth made an appearance in springtime 2001.
