Pheeroan akLaff

A versatile drummer that has mainly been from the avant-garde, Pheeroan akLaff has appeared with a number of the more adventurous music artists in jazz of days gone by 20 years. In early stages, he used Jay Hoggard (1975) and in New Haven, CT, with Leo Smith’s New Dalta Ahkri. And a longtime association with altoist Oliver Lake (including use the reggae group Leap Up), akLaff spent some time working with Henry Threadgill’s Sextet, New Air flow (where he changed Steve McCall for Air’s last handful of recordings during 1983-1986), George Adams, Sonny Sharrock, Anthony Davis, Wayne Newton, Cecil Taylor, and Myra Melford. akLaff offers recorded like a innovator for Gramavision (an obscure EP in 1983) and Mu (1989).
