Phantom Tollbooth

A FRESH York post-punk/noise rock and roll trio led by early Yo La Tengo member Dave Rick, Phantom Tollbooth formed in 1984. Rounding out the lineup had been Gerard Smith on bass and Jon Jackets on drums. They released two EPs (1986’s Phantom Tollbooth EP and 1990’s Daylight within the Tranquil Area EP) and two full-length series (One-Way Discussion in 1987 and Power Gadget in 1988), during Homestead Information. Their potent make of loud art rock provides drawn evaluations to Fred Frith, and Rick was a constant contributor to fellow New Yorkers Bongwater and B.A.L.L. Upon dissolution from the music group in 1988, Rick became a member of Ruler Missile, Jon Jackets joined up with Canartic, and Gerard Smith became a member of Darling Nerves. In 2003, Robert Pollard revisited the Tollbooth audio, acquiring that band’s record Power Gadget and reinterpreted the lyrics and melodies because the record Beard of Lightning.
