For a part of 1966, Peter Van Gelder was bassist in the fantastic Society, the pioneering SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA psychedelic group most well-known for having a pre-Jefferson Airplane Grace Slick. Vehicle Gelder — whose name may also be spelled “Vandergelder,” actually in Great Culture guitarist Darby Slick’s autobiography — was surviving in Madison, Wisconsin when he was asked by Darby to come quickly to San Francisco to displace Bard Dupont. Though he wasn’t a bass participant, he worked well (unlike Dupont, evidently) hard to understand the instrument. Vehicle Gelder also performed sax and flute, and was into John Coltrane-styled jazz and Indian music aswell as rock and roll. His influences had been instrumental to make the band even more eclectic and innovative than it turned out while Dupont is at the lineup. Types of Vehicle Gelder’s exotic contact can be noticed on the fantastic Society’s edition of “Light Rabbit,” which he has soprano sax, and on the cover of “Character Boy,” which he has flute (and Sophistication Slick has recorder). He also had written several the band’s even more impressive tracks, “Grimly Developing” and “Arbitration,” which show up on the live 1966 recordings (reissued in a number of forms, like the Columbia Compact disc Collector’s Item).
