The explosive tenor saxophone playing of Peter Mokonotela has influenced South African jazz for pretty much four decades. A teenager when he became a member of the Top notch Swingsters offering vocalist Dolly Rathebe in 1961, Mokonotela proceeds to supply — along with tenor saxophonist Bennet Rahlau and alto saxophonist Conrad Zulu — the band’s amazing three sax audio. Mokonotela initially seduced attention along with his extremely inventive pennywhistle playing as an associate of kwela music group the Solven Whistlers in the past due-’50s.
