Peter Erskine

An experienced, flexible drummer, Peter Erskine has anchored big rings and jazz-rock fusion organizations. He’s known for advanced rhythms, special accompaniment, and effective, rippling solos. Erskine started drumming at three, and participated in Stan Kenton’s Country wide Stage Music group Camps from age six. He examined with Alan Dawson and Ed Soph, participating in the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan and Indiana School. He used Kenton from 1972 to 1975, after that from 1976 to 1978 with Maynard Ferguson. Erskine became a member of Weather Survey in 1978, and was their drummer and percussionist until 1982. He also do many West Coast periods in the past due ’70s, and was an associate of Techniques and Steps Forward. Through the ’80s he caused John Abercrombie’s groupings as well as the quartet Bass Wishes. He’s also caused Joe Farrell, Marc Johnson, Mike Brecker, Randy Brecker, John Scofield, Bob Mintzer, Lew Soloff, Kenny Kirkland, Mike Mandel, and Kenny Werner, amongst others. As a head, he debuted with Peter Erskine in 1982 on Modern, followed by many well-received initiatives for Denon. Through the ’90s, he created a good romantic relationship with ECM, launching such albums as 1992’s You Hardly ever Know, 1995’s SINCE IT Is normally, and 1998’s Juni. Also through the ’90s, Erskine founded his very own Fuzzy Music label, providing such albums as 1995’s From Kenton to Today with tenor saxophonist Richard Torres and 1998’s Lava Jazz. In the 2000s, Erskine continuing release a albums via Fuzzy Music with 2002’s Badlands, 2005’s The Lounge Artwork Outfit: Music for Moderns, and 2016’s Dr. Um, which presented his Dr. Um Music group offering keyboardist John Beasley. In 2017, Erskine reunited Beasley as well as the Dr. Um Music group for Second Opinion.
