Pete Candoli

The elder from the trumpet-playing Candoli brothers, Pete initially produced the higher impact of both in Woody Herman’s Initial Herd in the tail end from the golf swing era. A robust, flamboyant soloist, his big second came toward the finish of “Apple Honey,” where he’d come in a Superman outfit and cut loose scorching, dissonant flurries of high records. Pete started using the Sonny Dunham music group in his 17th yr (1940-1941) and handed through the rings of Will Bradley, Benny Goodman, Ray McKinley, Tommy Dorsey, Freddie Slack, and Charlie Barnet before settling in to the Herman music group from 1944 to 1946. He worked well for Tex Beneke (1947-1949) and Jerry Grey (1950-1951) before shifting to LA, where he became immersed in studio room work with part trips in to the Les Brownish (1952) and Stan Kenton (1954-1956) rings. From 1957 to 1962, he co-led an organization with Conte and later on fronted his personal music group, while recording by himself for Columbia, Warner Bros., Kapp, and Somerset. He continues to be married to performers Betty Hutton and Edie Adams; using the second option, he created a nightclub take action in 1972 where he sang, danced, led the orchestra, and performed. He would continue steadily to perform with Conte on / off in to the 1990s. Although Pete’s profile have been low and his trumpet technique slipped in old age, he could still burn off inside a swing-grounded way within the ’90s.
