Paulinho Da Costa

Biography

The Brazilian-born Paulinho Da Costa, an endlessly adaptable percussionist using a knack for hitting exactly the best isolated beat at the proper time, became perhaps one of the most in-demand sidemen in Los Angeles’ busy recording studios in the later ’70s and early ’80s. He began playing his equipment at age group seven, ultimately accumulating over 200 drums, bells, whistles, as well as other percussion equipment. Prior to departing Brazil, he toured the planet with several Brazilian ensembles and also danced with samba groupings. Upon settling within the U.S. in 1973, he became a member of Sergio Mendes and Brasil ’77 for four years (1973-1977), and in his free time, documented with famous brands Dizzy Gillespie (like the notorious disco record Dizzy’s Party), Milt Jackson, Joe Move, and Freddie Hubbard. Shortly the documenting studios beckoned full-time, and Da Costa was popular for all sorts of documenting gigs, playing on albums by Herbie Hancock, Ahmad Jamal, Nancy Wilson, and Ella Fitzgerald, among numerous others. Da Costa in addition has documented sporadically being a head for the Pablo label.
