b. Welling, Kent, Britain. Tenor and soprano saxophonist Dunmall has generated a striking status among fellow post-modernists. After beginning around the clarinet at age 12, Dunmall graduated to alto and tenor and became a member of his first music group while still at college. He toured European countries using the avant garde rock and roll group Marsupilami in 1969, before shifting to America within the middle-70s where he used Alice Coltrane and Johnny ‘Electric guitar’ Watson amongst others. Dunmall came back to Britain in 1976, and 3 years afterwards co-founded the wonderful contemporary jazz quartet Heart Level. In 1985, he became a member of Alan Skidmore in Tenor Tonic, and the next year produced the Paul Dunmall Quartet with Tony Moore, Alex Maguire and Steve Noble. One of the various other performers with whom Dunmall provides subsequently proved helpful are Elton Dean, Keith Tippett, Annie Whitehead, Paul Rogers, Tag Sanders, Tony Levin and John Adams, not only is it an associate of Mujician as well as the London Jazz Composers Orchestra. An untrammelled improviser, Dunmall includes a deep feeling of the root base of jazz and can be in a position to absorb into his playing various other musical forms, including traditional and, perhaps amazingly, folk. Dunmall’s energetic and ambitious improvisations region place intellectual and psychological needs upon his listeners and his uncompromising method of his music provides kept him from popular popular acceptance. Even so, inside the improvised music coterie his status offers flourished. By enough time of the past due 90s arranged Bebop Starburst, his name had been recognized further afield and his skills much more broadly approved. Additionally, and without diminishing his position as a significant improviser, Dunmall in addition has developed as an experienced writer.
